A beautiful Blanc de Blancs from mythic Champagne producer Salon. Pale gold in hue with hints of green. The nose is complex - orange flowers with the merest hint of honey-dew, candied citrus notes, madeleine buns warm from the oven. The palate is inordinately fine and linear with magnificent poise. This is the quintessence of Champagne Salon, suited for hedonistic pairings such as lobster bisque, truffle risotto, caviar, Parma ham and mature parmesan.

The 2002 Salon is in an ideal spot for drinking now. What a wine. The 2002 captures all the natural radiance of this benchmark vintage in its rich, sumptuous personality. All the elements are so well balanced. Apricot, yellow flowers, tropical fruit, menthol and spice are all amplified. It`s a total stunner. Dosage is under 4 grams per liter. 62,000 bottles and 5,000 magnums made. Salon were the only house that didn`t release a 2000, according to them. This 2002 is therefore the next vintage following their 1999. The nose is beautifully open – buttercream, bakery dough with a saline and flint character too. Impeccable but very subtle fruit. This is excellence done by degrees. There`s a floral quality, and a smoky, reductive edge too. Even some honey. It`s only just entering its drinking window. As is often said of the very best champagnes, this is wine first and sparkling second. (RH)

Rare and Beautiful
One of the world's most famous prestige cuvée, the first vintage of Champagne Salon was 1905, although it wouldn't be until the 1920s that these wines were finally released to the public. An unparalleled Blanc de Blancs, Salon comes from a single hectare plot and nineteen other smaller plots in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, and the wine is only prouced in the very finest vintages. As a result, the 20th century saw only 37 bottlings of this fabled Champagne.
Every bottle of Salon is held at the estate cellars for 10 years before release. The result is a highly complex, layered Blanc de Blancs Champagne which has the capacity to age for decades.
