Frédéric Esmonin Ruchottes-Chambertin 1990 is a Grand Cru Pinot Noir from one of the smallest and most exclusive sites in Gevrey-Chambertin. This bottling comes from a time when the estate`s style was defined by traditional methods and a focus on site-clarity. More than 30 years of ageing have transformed this wine into a complex sensory experience, featuring notes of dried cherries, leather, truffle and game. The palate is full-bodied and velvety, with the tannins having completely resolved into a seamless mouthfeel.

Esmonin claims his 1990s were not filtered, but reports circulate that a Kisselguhr filtration was done after malolactic. These wines are less intense than most good 1990s. And yes, they do reveal that spit-polished look that suggests either excessive fining or filtration. Among the grands crus, the Ruchottes-Chambertin enjoys fine depth, a spicy, earthy, leathery nose, moderate tannins, average to slightly above average concentration, and a ripe, alcoholic finish. Drink it between 1995-2004 . Various American importers.
