Biondi-Santi Rosso di Montalcino 2022 is a pure Sangiovese sourced from the younger vines of the historic Il Greppo estate. The 2022 vintage was warm, but the high-altitude vineyards and the BBS11 clone allowed the fruit to maintain its characteristic freshness and poise. Unlike many in the region, Biondi-Santi produces a Rosso intended for ageing, using traditional fermentation and 12 months in large Slavonian oak casks. This 2022 bottling serves as a sophisticated introduction to the estate style, offering immediate charm alongside the potential for future development.

Classic to the core and youthfully intense, the 2022 Rosso di Montalcino slowly evovles with a bouqet of dried roses, mint-laced strawberries and nuances of worn leather. It's initially soft in texture but quickly firms up through a core of tart red berry fruits that saturate. Chewy minerality adds complexity toward the close. The acidity is on point, nicely balancing the concentration of the vintage. That said, the tannins are a bit forbidding at this stage, so give the 2022 a few years in the cellar. Tradition and Innovation

One of Tuscany's most venerable estates, the Biondi Santi family have been producing wines from the Greppo vineyards since the 1800s. Still family owned and now managed by Franco Biondi Santi and his children, the winery produces three wines - a straight Brunello di Montalcino, a Riserva and Sassoalloro, IGT Toscana - both using 100% Sangiovese.

The vineyard team manage around twenty five hectares of vines and the focus is very much on traditional techniques and preserving the fresh character of the fruit. This means early harvests, long macerations and mostly stainless steel or inactive oak for ageing although the Riserva sees some more active oak initially before being racked into larger casks.
