For many fine wine aficionados, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the pinnacle of wine. Run for many years by the indefatigable Aubert de Villaine, the domaine consists of 25 hectares of biodynamically tended vineyards, all of which are of Grand Cru classification and include some of the greatest terroirs in Burgundy.

The 2002 Romanée Saint Vivant is highly aromatic with floral, red berried and smoky nuances.

Medium red with a palish rim. Very sexy aromas and flavors of cherry, dried rose, cinnamon and herbs. Not an opulent style but boasts terrific definition and energy to its strong cherry and berry flavors accented by pepper and leather. This very young, tight RSV needs either a few hours in a decanter or another 5+ years in the cellar. Will eventually go truffley and underbrushy but there's no sign of tertiary aromas today. Cellarmaster Bernard Noble noted that there are some regrets about 2002: we could have waited another four or five days to pick. At this stage, our '02s show less flesh and more spirit.

Mocha, toasted oak, and roasting spices are discerned in the nose of the light to medium-bodied 2002 Romanee-St.-Vivant. Its suave, silky-textured attack reveals impressive black cherry and blackberry flavors intermingled with cafe au lait as well as violets. This light to medium-bodied wine’s mid-palate has terrific mouth-feel yet its lengthy finish displays some firm tannin that will require patience. Drink it between 2009 and 2016. - Pierre Rovani
