Based in Vosne-Romanée, Domaine Charles Noëllat was a wine estate which was purchased by Lalou Bize-Leroy in 1988 and became Domaine Leroy. The family kept rights to the name and today, Charles Noëllat operates as a boutique négociant business. The remaining bottlings of Domaine Charles Noëllat are now very scarce and highly sought-after. This is a rare magnum bottle of the Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru from the 1985 vintage, a standout year for red Burgundy.

The 1985 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru (from a vineyard that, along with others, was sold to Lalou Bize-Leroy three years later) was poured from magnum. It has a lightly ferrous, rather muddy nose that feels rustic for this vineyard, turning quite briny with aeration. The palate is better: well balanced and lightly spiced with moderate depth. It runs out of ideas toward the fatigued finish, yet it does have bucolic charm. Neal Martin1st August 2021
