Rocca di Frassinello is the fruit of a unique collaboration between Castellare di Castellina and the iconic French producer Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite. The concept was born out of a desire to bring together Castellare’s expertise in cultivating Sangiovese grapes with Lafite’s long standing knowledge of classical French varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. The resulting wine has aromas of red berries, plums, liquorice and warm spices. It’s a medium-bodied wine, with a velvety mouthfeel and generous finish.
94 Robert Parker
The headline wine from Rocca di Frassinello is this hearty blend of Sangioveto (Sangiovese), Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It represents a selection of the best fruit from across the estate. The 2018 Maremma Toscana Rocca di Frassinello is a darkly concentrated expression with dark plum, bitter chocolate, spice, leather and cured tobacco. This is a very concentrated and savory expression that draws out the richness and the textural structure of your textbook Tuscan red. — Monica Larner, 14th January 2021
94 Vinous
The 2018 Rocca di Frassinello is a bold, exotic wine. Ripe red cherry, kirsch, cinnamon and rose petal are all kicked up in this flamboyant Maremma red. Plush fruit and silky tannins add to its considerable appeal. Hints of sweet pipe tobacco, cedar and mint appear over time, adding striking inner perfume and sweetness. The 2018 is a decidedly racy Rocca di Frassinello. — Antonio Galloni, 1st January 2021
