Château Rieussec is a renowned winery situated in the Sauternes region of Bordeaux. The estate, which covers approximately 93 hectares, is celebrated for its production of exquisite sweet wines. Currently owned by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), Château Rieussec`s reputation is upheld by its classification as a Premier Cru Classé in the Sauternes and Barsac classification of 1855. An extraordinary achievement, the 2001 vintage displays a delicate golden hue, accompanied by aromas of honeysuckle, oak with a touch of smokiness, and tropical fruits with caramelized nuances. A full-bodied sweet wine that remains balanced, steering clear of excessiveness or weightiness due to its well-preserved acidity.

The 2001 Rieussec is deeper in color than its peers, though this did come from a half-bottle. The bouquet features marmalade, peach and mango scents, though I aver that it does not deliver the mineralité of other, dare I say, more successful vintages. The palate is much better, offering harmonious honeyed fruit, marmalade, orange peel, apricot and light gingerbread notes. It feels long and tender on the finish. This is a great Rieussec that is slightly compromised by the aromatics. Neal Martin1st September 2021
