Rieussec 1996 is a mature sweet wine from the Sauternes appellation of Bordeaux. This vintage exhibits a rich golden hue, with an intricate profile of dried fruits, honey and subtle spices. The palate reveals a medium-bodied texture, marked by a harmonious interplay of sweetness and a striking acidity that underscores its complexity. Château Rieussec has a long history dating back to the 18th century and is classified as a Premier Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux classification. The vineyard benefits from proximity to the Ciron River, which contributes to the ideal conditions for noble rot, essential for creating this iconic sweet wine.

Tasted at the château, the 1996 Rieussec has a lucid golden color. The nose is quite mature with burnt toffee, mandarin and barley sugar scents, quite perfumed and intense, although I suggest lacking the class and precision of more recent vintages. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, viscous on the entry with acacia honey, red plums, a hint of marzipan and a dash of spice towards the finish. There is good body here, fine persistence, even if it lacks the finesse of more recent vintages. - Neal Martin
