Given my derisory tasting notes out of barrel, I was gobsmacked by the showing (blind) of the 2006 Reserve de la Comtesse at Farr Vintners' horizontal. It has a lifted bouquet with blackberry and graphite aromas, strict but focused, aloof even. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, smooth in the mouth, but not quite as complex as the nose suggests, with spicy black fruit, graphite and sage towards the finish. I will seek to re-taste this at a later date to reconfirm this showing. Tasted April 2016.Neal Martin30th May 2016

Bright ruby-red. Fresh aromas of currant, minerals and herbs. Seamless and sweet, with moderate density to the black raspberry flavor. No shortage of verve or complexity. Finishes with rather gentle tannins and good length. Ten years ago most of this fruit would have gone into the grand vin, noted marketing director Gildas d'Ollone.Stephen Tanzer1st May 2007

A Benchmark Pauillac

Also known by the full name of Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, the estate is celebrated for its Grand Vin, a Pauillac Second Growth which is a wonderfully vibrant red with well-structured, characterful tannins. Seen as one of the benchmark producers from Pauillac and well-known for wines that offer beautifully ripe fruit, sumptuous texture and deep savoury complexity.

With currently 74 hectares of vineyards in production, 50% is used to produce the first wine, whilst the remaining 50% - from younger vines- goes into producing the estate's second wine, Pichon Comtesse Réserve (known as Réserve de la Comtesse prior to 2017). Key varieties are the classic red Bordeaux grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
