Here is the 2018 vintage from a superb Margaux estate. 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. The 2018 vintage is characterised by its density. Bewitching notes of strawberry tobacco, black fruit tinged with liquorice, ripe floral aromas of violets, fresh, zesty notes of pink grapefruit. The palate is broad and soft. A remarkable wine, the fruit of perfectly matured grapes. Sold in luxurious magnum format.

Luscious aromatics of ripe figs, blackberry puree, red liqourice, the tannins are supple and even a little melted at five years old, although there are plenty of them, and they are still fully in control. The floral waves of violet, roses and raspberry leaf that so often accompany Rauzan Ségla are present even in this hot year, with low yields of 32hl/h after mildew early in the season (any impacted vines were harvested, sorted and vinified separately). 65% new oak, 32hl/h yield, 3.8ph. A blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Rauzan-Segla is deep garnet-purple in color. It slowly emerges from the glass with evocative notes of baked blackberries and blackcurrant cordial, plus waves of blueberry pie, sandalwood, rose bud tea, and licorice. The medium to full-bodied palate is plush and juicy, with seamless freshness and a long, spicy finish.Lisa Perrotti-Brown21st March 2024

The 2018 Rauzan-Ségla has a sublime bouquet of black cherries, violet and lavender, all beautifully defined and focused. The oak is seamlessly enmeshed both here and on the palate. The graphite-tinged black fruit is framed by very fine tannins and matched with a perfect bead of acidity. There is an abiding symmetry about this Rauzan-Ségla that is totally endearing, and it delivers so much freshness on the finish. Absolutely superb. Neal Martin21st March 2021

Tasted blind. Smudgy rim. High toned. A little more moderate than some top 2018s. Correct but quite low key. No shortage of tannin; a slight shortage of drama – which may be no bad thing? Some slight green notes but the weight of wine makes up for them. (JR)Jancis Robinson20th January 2022
