Rauzan Segla 500cl 1996 is a red wine hailing from the prestigious Margaux appellation in Bordeaux, France. This jeroboam features a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, with small inclusions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The 1996 vintage is characterised by a lengthy growing season, contributing to the full phenolic ripeness of the grapes. With an alcohol content of 13%, it has undergone 18 months of maturation in 60% new French oak. The wine offers distinct notes of crème de cassis, dried violets, and cedar, framed by a refined tannin structure. The 500cl format encourages a gradual evolution, maintaining its floral nuances. Rauzan Segla, established in the 17th century, is noted for its commitment to quality and tradition, making this vintage a noteworthy selection for collectors.

The 1996 Rauzan-Ségla is a vintage that has not matured as well as I hoped. It offers a slightly smudged bouquet with undergrowth infused black fruit laced with tar, this particular bottle a little more citric than others that I have encountered over the years. The palate is better, as I have found before, with cedar and white pepper infused black fruit, and refreshingly saline. Yet, it feels a little surly towards the finish, the tannins a little dry. I cannot see much upswing in this Rauzan-Ségla after 22 years. Not bad, but surpassed by subsequent vintages. Tasted at the Vinous 1996 Bordeaux tasting at Berry Brothers & Rudd. A Margaux Super Second

Setting the bar for quality winemaking in Margaux, the vineyards of Château Rauzan-Ségla are planted to 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 1% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and are used to produce both the prestigious first wine and the second wine, known as Ségla.

These are wonderfully elegant, vibrant reds that see 60-70% new oak. Considered by many to be one of the greatest properties in Margaux, Rauzan-Ségla is now firmly established as one of Bordeaux`s ‘Super Seconds’.
