The 1962 Rauzan-Ségla has moderate ageing on the tawny rim but the core is healthy and clear. The bouquet is simple but well defined, still fresh and with something to offer, light red berry fruit, wild hedgerow, morels and almost Burgundy-like in style. The palate maybe does not quite match the delightful aromatics: leather, vestiges of red fruit and hints of Moroccan spice. It feels dry and austere on the finish. Sadly this 1962 does not hold up in the glass so anyone opening a bottle should not decant this but pour directly. Unsurprisingly, the 1961 Rauzan-Ségla tasted a few weeks earlier is much better. 400 barrels produced. Tasted at the Rauzan-Ségla vertical at the château. Neal Martin1st April 2019

Chateau Rauzan-Segla
A Margaux Super Second
Setting the bar for quality winemaking in Margaux, the vineyards of Château Rauzan-Ségla are planted to 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 1% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and are used to produce both the prestigious first wine and the second wine, known as Ségla.
These are wonderfully elegant, vibrant reds that see 60-70% new oak. Considered by many to be one of the greatest properties in Margaux, Rauzan-Ségla is now firmly established as one of Bordeaux`s ‘Super Seconds’.
