Quintessa is a premium producer based in Rutherford, Napa. From the immensely powerful 2013 vintage, this Cabernet-dominant Bordeaux blend is dense and structured yet superbly balanced and fragrant. On the nose it has a wonderful bouquet of cassis, blueberry, anise, graphite, vanillin oak and dried flowers. Full-bodied and rich, this has admirable purity, depth and finesse, with almost certain potential for improvement in the cellar.

Still showing terrifically youthful purple color, the 2013 Proprietary Red Wine delivers waves of cedar, vanilla and black cherries. It's richer and more concentrated than typical for the estate yet still silky in feel, with a medium to full-bodied palate and ample length on the mocha-tinged finish. It should drink well for another 15 years or so.Joe Czerwinski15th September 2022

A naturally powerful vintage, where the inherent character is muscular and intense (as a small indication as to why, there were on average 3 seeds per berry in 2013 compared to one in 2011, meaning a huge potential for extraction of tannins). Expect layers of chocolate, tar, espresso, liqourice, charred oak, bay leaf, eucalyptus, a slight hardness to the tannins on the close of play that will soften further over the next few years, even though it doesn't detract from the succulent fig and blackberry fruits. You can begin drinking now but will it benefit from a good long aeration. Charles Thomas winemaker, Michel Rolland consultant, 85% new oak for ageing.Jane Anson9th February 2022
