Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts 2016 is a medium-bodied Burgundy white wine from the Premier Cru climat of Les Referts in the Puligny-Montrachet appellation of the Côte de Beaune. Situated in Puligny-Montrachet, Domaine Etienne Sauzet comprises 15 hectares of estate vineyards spread across Puligny-Montrachet, Cormot-le-Grand, and Chassagne-Montrachet, supplemented by small amounts of externally sourced fruit. The vineyards have followed organic farming practices since 2006, transitioning to biodynamic methods in 2010, with certification obtained in 2013. This specific bottling hails from their 0.70-hectare plot in the Premier Cru Les Referts. "Restrained and cool aromas reflect notes of matchstick, citrus and a wide range of white-fleshed fruit. The succulent and very round flavours possess excellent mid-palate density while delivering excellent length on the sappy and refreshing finish. This mildly austere effort is sufficiently rich to allow for early accessibility yet the underlying structure is clearly present to allow for up to a decade of improvement. This is quality juice." Vinous
Bright light yellow. Aromas of yellow peach, smoke and hazelnut convey a leesy complexity. Displays yellower flavors than the 2017 version yet retains a light touch, thanks to its sound acidity. In a rather masculine style, finishing long and quite dry, with dusty tannins, repeating nutty notes and a note of mineral austerity. Assistant winemaker Riffault considers Referts to be a terroir for cellaring, noting that this wine always has good tartaric acidity and needs some time to demonstrate sex appeal.Stephen Tanzer1st September 2018
