Domaine Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Les Perrières 2005 is a Chardonnay from a vineyard known for its thin, stony soils over solid limestone. The 2005 vintage in the Côte de Beaune produced wines with incredible concentration and a firm, structural acidity. Sauzet is a master of Puligny, and this release shows the estate’s ability to balance power with a crystalline mineral focus. Aged in French oak with approximately 30% new barrels, the wine has developed notes of white peach, citrus oil and toasted brioche. The palate is intense and linear, defined by a persistent saline minerality that is typical of the Perrières site.

Delicate if rather inexpressive nose hints at flowers, menthol and porcini; a bit less pure than the Referts. Suppler on entry but less sweet than the Referts; this has a rather gentle texture and an edge of acidity but could use a bit more grip. Firms up on the back half, showing a more taut minerality, but I find this a bit less ripe than the Referts, possibly the effect of some stress in these vines. This rather elegantly styled wine will need time.Stephen Tanzer1st September 2007
