Etienne Sauzet owns and manages vineyard plots in some of the most esteemed terroirs in Puligny-Montrachet and neighbouring appellations. The Domaine was founded in the early 20th century by Etienne Sauzet and has been managed by several generations of the Sauzet family. The portfolio includes this ‘Les Combettes’, a Premier Cru vineyard situated on the southern end of the Puligny-Montrachet commune. The 2010 growing season in Burgundy was characterized by favourable weather conditions, resulting in wines with great balance and complexity. The region experienced a cool summer with moderate temperatures, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and develop optimal flavours while retaining good acidity.

The 2010 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes from Etienne Sauzet has an attractive bouquet featuring scents of lemon curd and orange pith behind the crushed stone aromas, although it does not quite deliver the same precision as Leflaive’s Combette. The palate is well balanced with just a touch of reduction on the entry and a fine bead of acidity. Quite saline in the mouth, although it needs a tad more length. Overall, a fine Combettes, but I might just afford it another couple of years in bottle. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2010 white burgundy tasting in London. Neal Martin1st June 2020

Sauzet’s 2010 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes is harmonious and beautifully balanced. Nothing in particular stands out. Ultimately, the Combettes is a wine of textural roundness and suppleness. Hints of reduction appear on the finish but they are balanced by the wine’s sheer depth in this case. Anticipated maturity: 2014+.
I have to admit I was a bit perplexed by these 2010s from Sauzet. A number of wines were massively reduced and/or heavily sulfured to a degree I did not encounter at any other property I visited. The best selections in the lineup are quite strong, which suggests some of those elements may dissipate over time as the wines integrate, but at the same time, I can only report what is in the glass, and the reality is that some of the wines in this lineup are very awkward at this stage. I suggest readers taste the Sauzet 2010s before making any major commitments. The 2010 harvest started on September 17th. Yields were closer to normal in the village wines, but down by as much as 35% in the premier and grand crus. The wines spent 12 months in oak, 25-35% new for the premier crus, and 35% new for the grand crus, followed by six months in tank.
