Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes 2017 is a medium- to full-bodied Burgundy white wine from the Premier Cru climat of Les Combettes in the Puligny-Montrachet appellation of the Côte de Beaune. Now led by Brice de la Morandière, Domaine Leflaive is one of the most influential estates in Puligny-Montrachet. The estate focuses almost entirely on white wines made from Chardonnay, including four Grand Cru and four Premier Cru expressions. On the 2017 Les Combettes. "The Leflaive`s 0.73ha of vines in Combettes were planted in 1960 and 1972, and consistently produce very small, intensely flavoured berries. And this is intense stuff, with beeswax, fresh pastry and citrus peel notes, stylish 20% new wood and remarkable palate length." Decanter, 2018

The 2017 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes 1er Cru is a little too reduced for my liking, although it seems to recover with aeration and there is plenty of fruit concentration. The palate is slightly tropical on the entry, but very pure, with a fine bead of acidity. Fresh and quite saline, it needs two or three years to assimilate the oak, though it should be worth the wait because there is a lot of extract and intensity. Pushing Grand Cru in quality. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Savigny-lès-Beaune. Neal Martin1st August 2021

Domaine Leflaive

The pinnacle of Puligny-Montrachet

Founded in the 18th century, Domaine Leflaive has built a storied reputation for its commitment to biodynamic farming and exceptional craftsmanship. The estate owns 22 hectares of vineyards, including 10 hectares of Premiers Crus in Puligny-Montrachet (Les Combettes, Les Pucelles, Le Clavoillon, Les Folatières), as well as no fewer than 5 hectares of Grands Crus (Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, and a tiny holding in Le Montrachet).

Joseph Leflaive, whose vision and dedication in the early 20th century were pivotal, transformed the domaine into a symbol of excellence. In the 1990s, Anne-Claude Leflaive introduced biodynamic practices, adhering to rigorous standards that respect the natural rhythms of the earth, promoting soil health and vine vitality without synthetic chemicals. This holistic approach results in Chardonnay wines celebrated for their purity, depth, and complexity. Each bottle reflects the rich heritage and innovative spirit that have made Domaine Leflaive a revered name among wine enthusiasts.
