This Premier Cru Clos de la Mouchère, crafted by Henri Boillot, showcases an exceptionally refined nose with a subtle hint of barrel toast. The complexity of aromas is truly impressive, and the fruit stands out for its remarkable freshness. The wine exhibits great intensity, boasting abundant notes of fresh plum, with the oak influence contributing to a smooth and lingering finish. The wine maintains a perfect balance and tension, thanks to the carefully timed harvest. The meticulous vinification of the four individual plots, followed by their thoughtful assembly, results in a truly outstanding wine. Presented here in half-bottles.

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Clos de la Mouchère 1er Cru has a reductive bouquet that, at the moment, occludes the terroir expression and mineralité. But I feel there is a complex and involving wine underneath, and it just needs bottle age. The palate is well-balanced, with a tangy entry and fine acidity. It's peppery in style with a slightly "worked" finish. It's not bad, although maybe trying a bit too hard to impress. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. Neal Martin9th July 2024

Henri Boillot

Father and Son

In some ways, Henri Boillot has one foot in the past and one in the present. His family domaine, which he manages with his son Guillaume, has a history dating back to the 1880s, but the wines produced from their Meursault-based winery are undeniably modern, approachable and ranked among some of the very best in the region. Alongside operating a highly successful négociant business, the Boillot family own around 14 hectares of vineyards in the Côte de Beaune including a Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru monopole in the form of Clos de la Mouchère.

The winery don't shy away from the use of new oak and any overtly woody character is generally well balanced by ripe fruit. The Chardonnays range from citrus driven and fresher at the villages level all the way to ripe, tropical and creamy at the Grand Cru level. The reds are lighter and more elegant than they used to be with Henri's son Guillaume preferring a less extracted style of Pinot Noir.
