Back in 1989, Bill Harlan discovered the remote, uniquely rugged piece of land that would eventually become the Promontory vineyard; however, its inaugural commercial release was only in 2009. Though also primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, the style of Promontory differs to Harlan Estate and Bond due to the distinctive terroir-derived character of the fruit. More tannic and often with greater acidity, shorter macerations and longer maturation in oak (5 years) are favoured to retain clarity and vivacity. The 2012 is full-bodied, supremely ripe and surges across the palate with soaring amplitude. Remarkably complex layers of cassis, ash, tobacco, wet stones and spices playfully interweave over a chassis of immaculately chiselled tannins, culminating in a finish of well over a minute.

The 2012 Promontory is a very good wine, one that belongs to the early days here. It was the first wine to be aged partially in cask (50%) and signals a move towards the style that would come into focus more clearly with the 2014. Starting to show the first signs of aromatic development, the 2012 is also a fine choice for drinking now and over the next decade or so. Plum, espresso, mocha, new leather and a touch of French oak linger. Antonio Galloni9th May 2024
