Prieler Marienthal Blaufränkisch 2020 is a compelling expression from one of the most esteemed vineyards in Lake Neusiedl. The vineyard, dating back to 1881 and previously known as Marchteil, is characterised by its limestone base. The Prieler family has cultivated Blaufränkisch here for over 30 years, with their current parcel replanted under Georg Prieler`s direction. This vintage showcases the variety’s inherent depth, with distinct notes of dark fruit and structured tannins.

The 2020 Blaufränkisch Ried Marienthal is from a sandy limestone site. Blueberry, ink and cinnamon come together on an aromatic nose. The palate presents even more florality initially. The dense tannins weave into the fine acidity and present velvety richness that comes with a mocha edge on a precise, contoured body. Juicy berry peeks through again on the finish. The 2020 shows great substance, no fat, much depth and elegance. (Bone-dry)Anne Krebiehl15th February 2024

Oggau. Limestone, east-facing and warmed by the lake. Whole berries but not whole bunches. Spends 3–4 weeks in 500-litre Austrian oak for malolactic conversion in spring. Then racked to 1,200-litre oak vat for 18 months. Certified organic.
Mid cherry red. Very ripe and clearly a warm site. More fruit than mineral. Still has lots of freshness – unexpected with such ripe (but not overripe) fruit flavours. I prefer a little more restraint but this is harmonious in this riper, sweeter-fruited style. (JH)
