Château Poujeaux, in Moulis-en-Médoc, has long been one of the Left Bank`s best-value estates outside the 1855 classification, its blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot , Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot giving structured, characterful wines that age gracefully. 1990 was an outstanding, hot Bordeaux vintage, and this bottle should now be fully mature. Expect a brick-edged colour, aromas of black cherry, cedar, tobacco and dried herbs, and a palate that is soft, savoury and long. Best drunk now with roast lamb, beef or mature cheese.

Aromas of sweet cherries, mocha and oak. A straightforward, round wine that lacks the sweetness and mid-palate richness of the vintage. Seems slightly pinched on the finish. Where's the ripeness? 84. A second sample showed considerably more fat and richness, as well as ripe finishing fruit, and merited an 87.Stephen Tanzer1st November 1993
