Located in the far north of the Médoc, Château Potensac is a leading Cru Bourgeois estate owned by the Delon family since the 1970s. A relatively large property, it consists of 50 hectares of vineyards which are planted on soils rich in alluvial gravel and red clay. The 2019 vintage is a blend of 47% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, matured in small oak barrels. It is a bright, medium-bodied wine, with a pronounced mineral character and gentle floral accents.

The 2019 Pontensac has an open-knit red cherry and crushed strawberry scented nose that conveys joie-de-vivre. The palate is sweet on the entry, fleshier than expected, a little oaky and missing a bit of grip on the finish. Like the 2019 Le Boscq, this is early drinking, but does the job. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. Neal Martin1st February 2023
