Château Potensac 2012 is a Médoc blend of 48% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Cabernet Franc managed by the Delon family of Léoville Las Cases. The 2012 vintage favored the Merlot components on the cooler clay soils of Ordonnac and it was aged in 30% new oak displaying a savoury profile of cedar and tobacco. The wine maintains a classic and somewhat austere structural finish which is characteristic of the northern Médoc and it provides an excellent example of the balance achieved during this transitionary vintage.

The 2012 Potensac is missing some definition on the nose, a little muffled and leathery. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, cohesive and pretty, though it lacks real complexity. That said, whilst a first bottle lacked a bit of substance, a second showed more weight with a peppery, quite lively finish. Tasted blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting. The 2012 Potensac is medium to deep garnet colored. It offers notes of mocha, cedar chest, and cloves with a core of prunes and fruitcake plus a hint of cumin seed. The medium-bodied palate has mature fruit, with a firm, chewy texture and just enough freshness, finishing a little hard.Lisa Perrotti-Brown16th February 2023
