A red wine from the Pauillac appellation in Bordeaux, the 2021 vintage of Pontet Canet (Kosher) exemplifies a blend primarily composed of Cabernet Sauvignon. Crafted under stringent kosher supervision, this fifth growth winery employs biodynamic practices, including horse ploughing, to nurture its vineyards. The cooler growing conditions of 2021 resulted in a balanced wine with an alcohol content of 13%. Aged in both new oak and concrete amphorae, it presents a profile of blackcurrants, graphite, and cedarwood. The estate, under the stewardship of Alfred Tesseron, continues to deliver wines of distinction, setting a high standard for kosher Bordeaux.

The 2021 Pontet-Canet is deep garnet-purple in color. It slowly unfurls to reveal expressive notes of crunchy black cherries, fresh blueberries, and black raspberries, leading to suggestions of wet slate, black olives, rose petals, and cardamon. The light to medium-bodied palate is bright and lively, with wonderfully pure black fruit and mineral-inspired flavors and a fine-grained texture, finishing with a floral lift.Lisa Perrotti-Brown23rd April 2024

The 2021 Pontet-Canet is a soft, open-knit, attractive wine, but its light structure is impossible to look past. Graphite, dried herbs, menthol and licorice fill out the layers. The 2021 is a fairly accessible Pontet Canet that will drink well with minimal cellaring. Harvest took place from September 24 through October 12. Yields were 34 hectoliters per hectare.Antonio Galloni27th February 2024

58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot.Very dark with purplish rim. Open and fragrant, a touch floral along with fine savoury fruit. Powerful and very different from most of the 2021s in this line-up. Dry, elegantly tannic finish. (JH)

Quality and Consistency

Château Pontet-Canet is a highly-regarded Fifth Growth wine estate in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. In recent years, Pontet-Canet has become one of Bordeaux’s most innovative wine estates, implementing biodynamic practices in the vineyards, and introducing alternative fermentation and ageing vessels, such as concrete eggs – all in the pursuit of ever greater quality and purity in its wines.

Pontet-Canet produces Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends with Merlot and smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wines are typically full-bodied with excellent purity of fruit and considerable ageing potential. High critical acclaim for recent vintages, in particular from 2009 and 2010 onwards, has propelled the estate into the ranks of the best-performing producers in Pauillac. The estate is owned by Alfred and Michel Tesseron, members of a family of leading producer of fine aged Cognacs, who also own Château Lafon-Rochet in St-Estèphe.
