Under the direction of the Tesseron family, Château Pontet-Canet has ascended to new heights in the past decade. The 2016 is an exuberant and profoundly complex wine composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. It is rich, full-bodied and incredibly long, with enough structure and acidity to age for at least 30-40 years.

Oh this is good. We are fully up to 2010 level here and coming close to surpassing it. A full wall of tannins, one of those wines that you have to scale to get to the heights but the views are great at the top. Cassis, bilberry, liqourice, black chocolate, aniseed, all with a sense of enegy and such freshness on the finish. Clear depth and vivacity to all elements of this wine. It needs time, because the tannins are a little forbidding right now, but it is going to be worth the wait. Harvest September 28 to October 12.Jane Anson15th October 2021

The 2016 Pontet-Canet yet again suggested that there is inconsistency between bottles. It has a decadent bouquet of precocious red fruit laced with truffle, garrigue and meat juice aromas – not the most typical Pauillac that you will find, though not unattractive. The palate is full-bodied with soft, rounded tannins and slightly lower perceived acidity than its peers. There is impressive volume on this lavish Pauillac, but this bottle seems to have mislaid its typicité. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting. Neal Martin1st August 2020

Quality and Consistency

Château Pontet-Canet is a highly-regarded Fifth Growth wine estate in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. In recent years, Pontet-Canet has become one of Bordeaux’s most innovative wine estates, implementing biodynamic practices in the vineyards, and introducing alternative fermentation and ageing vessels, such as concrete eggs – all in the pursuit of ever greater quality and purity in its wines.

Pontet-Canet produces Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends with Merlot and smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wines are typically full-bodied with excellent purity of fruit and considerable ageing potential. High critical acclaim for recent vintages, in particular from 2009 and 2010 onwards, has propelled the estate into the ranks of the best-performing producers in Pauillac. The estate is owned by Alfred and Michel Tesseron, members of a family of leading producer of fine aged Cognacs, who also own Château Lafon-Rochet in St-Estèphe.
