The Château Pontet-Canet 2014 is a structured, dense Fifth Growth Pauillac, renowned for its pioneering commitment to biodynamic viticulture. Predominantly a Cabernet Sauvignon blend, the 2014 vintage was excellent in Bordeaux, noted for its strong structure and freshness, benefiting from a late, warm summer. This expression exhibits a deep, controlled intensity of cassis, graphite and incense, underpinned by a dense, chewy mid-palate and a framework of powerful, yet polished, tannins that require extended cellar time for resolution.
A clear step upwards from both the 2012 and 2013 in terms of Pauillac definition and punch, and it is following the usual trajectory of a wine from this corner of Bordeaux - meaning that it is still young at 7 years old, and needs another few years in bottle. Packed full of bilberry and cassis fruits, a deliciously cool and savoury style of Cabernet with crushed mint and blue fruits, concentrated and finessed. Plenty of juice on the finish also, I just love the progress of this wine through the palate, as it travels slowly but surely towards its destination. First year certified as Demeter (Biodyvin as of 2010, so this is a second biodynamic certification). Harvest Septeber 29 to October 10.Jane Anson15th October 2021

The bottle of 2014 Pontet-Canet showed better than the previous one at the 10-Year-On tasting in London. This offers much more restraint on the nose. It's quite precise, with greater mineralité seeping through the black cherry and cassis fruit. The palate has a sorbet-fresh entry, fine tannins and a silky sheen. The oak is fully subsumed after a decade, plus there is a little more depth on the finish compared to previous showings. This is a fine example of the vintage, and bottles should drink well over the next 12 to 15 years. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the Pontet-Canet dinner in Washington DC. The 2014 Pontet-Canet is medium to deep brick in color. Evolved, fading-fruit notions of potpourri, exotic spices, and cigar box give way to an undercurrent of dried red currants and prunes plus a lingering hint of anise. The medium-bodied palate has softened tannins and appealing freshness, although the fruit is tiring, leading to a stewed tea finish. This bottle seems a bit past it. Because this wine was tasted blind with the Southwold Group, and the note/score is very different from my previous reviews of it, I will refrain from scoring it until I have the opportunity to taste it again to confirm the bottle’s condition and my assessment.Lisa Perrotti-Brown5th March 2024

Château Pontet-Canet is a highly-regarded Fifth Growth wine estate in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. In recent years, Pontet-Canet has become one of Bordeaux’s most innovative wine estates, implementing biodynamic practices in the vineyards, and introducing alternative fermentation and ageing vessels, such as concrete eggs – all in the pursuit of ever greater quality and purity in its wines.
Pontet-Canet produces Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends with Merlot and smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
