With a long history that can be traced back to 1725, Château Pontet-Canet is a Fifth Growth estate located in the commune of Pauillac. Its vineyard covers approximately 81 hectares and is made up of around 800,000 vines looking out over the Gironde estuary. The 2010 vintage was the first vintage to be certified 100% organic and biodynamic. It is a blend composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, aged in 50% new oak. The wine has an impressive depth and power, boasting notes of cassis, red berries, pencil lead and floral accents.

Velvety tannins, intense with a black cherry and luscious creamy blackberry, fresh fig and raspberry fruits, with tobacco, liquorice, cedar, sandalwood, fennel. It's a wine to love, higher alcohol than usual in Pauillac which gives weight and texture through the mid palate, but the tannins are powerful enough to keep things confidently in check, and it is just starting to move into its drinking window. Harvest September 29 to October 17. First year of biodynamic certification.Jane Anson10th October 2024

The 2010 Pontet-Canet is noticeably deep in colour compared to its peers. This is unusually ripe and sweet on the nose, more red than black fruit, maybe a little jammy and confit-like. I would never guess this was a 2010 Left Bank. The palate is medium-bodied with a fleshy mouthfeel, plenty of graphite tinged red fruit. Approachable in style and sensually fulfilling, it just lacks a bit of grip and backbone on the finish. I have fonder memories of previous bottles but I could not identify any specific fault. Dense, rich and minty on the nose with real density. Lots of luscious chew. This is clearly from a great vintage with huge vivacity. Heavy undertow. Long. Minerals and firm. Racy. This was the sample tasted at Joanne and pictured in Report from Bordeaux 4. (JR)

Quality and Consistency

Château Pontet-Canet is a highly-regarded Fifth Growth wine estate in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. In recent years, Pontet-Canet has become one of Bordeaux’s most innovative wine estates, implementing biodynamic practices in the vineyards, and introducing alternative fermentation and ageing vessels, such as concrete eggs – all in the pursuit of ever greater quality and purity in its wines.

Pontet-Canet produces Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends with Merlot and smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wines are typically full-bodied with excellent purity of fruit and considerable ageing potential. High critical acclaim for recent vintages, in particular from 2009 and 2010 onwards, has propelled the estate into the ranks of the best-performing producers in Pauillac. The estate is owned by Alfred and Michel Tesseron, members of a family of leading producer of fine aged Cognacs, who also own Château Lafon-Rochet in St-Estèphe.
