Pontet Canet 1995 is a robust example of Left Bank Bordeaux from this esteemed estate in Pauillac, renowned for its commitment to organic practices since the early 1990s. This vintage displays a deep crimson hue, indicative of its age. On the palate, the wine presents concentrated notes of blackcurrant, supported by a firm tannic structure. Herbal undertones and subtle earthy elements emerge with time, highlighting its complexity.
90 Vinous
Dark ruby-red. Black- and redcurrants and smoke on the nose; less oak-spicy today than the '96. Silky and harmonious but currently rather withdrawn. Not quite as sweet as the '96. Here the substantial toothcoating tannins come across as somewhat tougher, but there enough sheer extract for balance. Interestingly, this backward, rather powerful wine suggests the structure and grip of cabernet, while the silkier mouth feel of the '96 suggests a high percentage of merlot.

Quality and Consistency

Château Pontet-Canet is a highly-regarded Fifth Growth wine estate in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. In recent years, Pontet-Canet has become one of Bordeaux’s most innovative wine estates, implementing biodynamic practices in the vineyards, and introducing alternative fermentation and ageing vessels, such as concrete eggs – all in the pursuit of ever greater quality and purity in its wines.

Pontet-Canet produces Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends with Merlot and smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wines are typically full-bodied with excellent purity of fruit and considerable ageing potential. High critical acclaim for recent vintages, in particular from 2009 and 2010 onwards, has propelled the estate into the ranks of the best-performing producers in Pauillac. The estate is owned by Alfred and Michel Tesseron, members of a family of leading producer of fine aged Cognacs, who also own Château Lafon-Rochet in St-Estèphe.
