Pontet Canet 1988 is a mature-vintage, Cabernet Sauvignon-based red wine from the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. Château Pontet-Canet is a highly-regarded Fifth Growth estate neighbouring Mouton Rothschild in Pauillac. Tracing its history back to 1725, the estate has been managed by the Tesseron family since 1975. On the 1988 Grand Vin. "One of the better Pauillacs. Pure blackcurrant nose with a touch of pencil lead. Tight now but fine powerful black fruits underneath. Well-defined. Cigar-box. Good grip and depth. Excellent effort." Neal Martin, 2000

The 1988 Pontet Canet, which predates Alfred Tesseron taking over the management of the estate, is clear in colour with moderate bricking on the rim. The nose is lacking some vigour, rustic and feral, light earthy and slightly under-ripe. The palate is medium-bodied with stalky black fruit, rather angular and this feels hollow towards the finish. If it serves one purpose, it shows how far the property has progressed under Alfred Tesseron. Tasted at the château. Neal Martin1st May 2018

Quality and Consistency

Château Pontet-Canet is a highly-regarded Fifth Growth wine estate in the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. In recent years, Pontet-Canet has become one of Bordeaux’s most innovative wine estates, implementing biodynamic practices in the vineyards, and introducing alternative fermentation and ageing vessels, such as concrete eggs – all in the pursuit of ever greater quality and purity in its wines.

Pontet-Canet produces Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blends with Merlot and smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wines are typically full-bodied with excellent purity of fruit and considerable ageing potential. High critical acclaim for recent vintages, in particular from 2009 and 2010 onwards, has propelled the estate into the ranks of the best-performing producers in Pauillac. The estate is owned by Alfred and Michel Tesseron, members of a family of leading producer of fine aged Cognacs, who also own Château Lafon-Rochet in St-Estèphe.
