Domaine de Courcel Pommard Les Rugiens 2005 is a mature-vintage Premier Cru red Burgundy from the climat of Les Rugiens in the Pommard commune of the Côte de Beaune. This wine uses Pinot Noir fruit from a 1.07ha parcel in Rugiens-Hauts and comes from the ripe 2005 vintage. "This is aromatically quite similar to the Fremiers and also flashes a background note of oak influence. The dense, powerful and super-rich mineral-driven big-bodied flavours possess first-rate levels of dry extract while delivering fine length on the mocha-inflected, bitter cherry pit and noticeably warm finish. This is certainly impressive in its fashion but it’s somewhat particular in the context of the vintage." Burghound, 2018

Good full red. Pungent redcurrant and raspberry aromas sharpened by minerality. Wonderfully concentrated but less open and exotic today than the Epenots, but this, too, is seamless and sweet. There's a firm minerally, spicy character here that reminded me of the young 2006. This fills the mouth every bit as much as the Epenots does but with less weight. Finishes firmly tannic but not hard. These wines, both weighing in at 14.3% alcohol, present two very different styles, but both should give great pleasure over the next two decades. Confuron thinks that they will be accessible at virtually every stage of their development in bottle.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2008
