Based in the commune of Pommard, Domaine de Courcel is an 11-hectare property still owned and run by the founding family. The estate includes holdings in four Premier Cru sites, Les Rugiens, Les Frémiers, Les Croix Noires and Le Grand Clos des Épenots, where this release comes from. The vineyard is located on an east-facing slope composed of clay and limestone soils and is planted with vines averaging approximately 60 years of age. The 2012 vintage had its fair share of adversities but still managed to produce some excellent wines.

Good deep red. Slightly roasted red fruits and dried spices on the nose and palate. Sweet, thick and mouthfilling; almost Rhône-like in its ripeness without coming across as heavy. Finishes with noble tannins, excellent length and surprising vinosity.Stephen Tanzer1st March 2015

Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Pommard 1er Cru Grand Clos des Epenots has one of the superior set of aromatics for this flight with well defined, mineral-driven black cherry and raspberry fruit, just a touch of undergrowth in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, the trademark Pommard backbone and austerity, just a slight bitterness towards the finish, but remaining true to what Pommard ought to be. I suspect this will age with some style and warrant a higher score. Neal Martin30th October 2015
