The 1988 Pommard Clos des Épenaux from Domaine Comte Armand is a Premier Cru red Burgundy made solely from Pinot Noir, derived from a monopole vineyard of 5.23 hectares. This specific vineyard`s rich clay and limestone soils underpin the wine’s depth. The nose presents mature aromas of dried red berries, earth and truffle, accompanied by subtle savoury notes. On the palate, the wine is structured, featuring resolved tannins and lively acidity, with flavours of dark cherry and game, concluding with an enduring, complex finish.

The 1988 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru has a dusty nose, and it comes across rather bretty and slightly fecal. The palate is riddled with volatility from start to finish, with a bitter distasteful finish. Sorry, but no, thank you. Tasted at the Clos des Epeneaux vertical in London.Neal Martin1st April 2023
