Niepoort Poeirinho 2015 is a medium-bodied red wine produced from Baga grapes in the Bairrada region of northern Portugal. Niepoort Poeirinho is the top bottling from Niepoort`s Quinta de Baixo winery in Barriada. It is made from centenarian Baga in the Cantanhede sub-region. The grapes are farmed biodynamically on chalky clay soils a short distance from the Atlantic coast. The wine presents a nuanced aroma profile including floral notes, forest fruits, red currant and cherries, followed by balsamic and minty undertones. The palate reveals a gentle and refined structure, upheld by ample tension and an acidity that bestows enduring vitality upon the wine. The finish is prolonged, leaving behind lingering aromas and subtle spice accents.

I did a mini-vertical of the Poeirinho Garrafeira, the 2015 and 2012 vintages, to check the evolution. The 2015 Poeirinho Garrafeira is a selection of the two best vats from the 2015 vintage aged for four years in oak vats. In 2015, they did the vinification in stainless steel, and it was a drier year. This has a lighter and brighter ruby color, and the wine has a lot more finesse and elegance. It`s fresher and has lower alcohol, 11.5% alcohol. It has less extraction, with more lightness and less tannin, but it continues developing nicely and doesn`t show any age at all. 5,360 bottles produced. It was bottled in 2019. - Luis Gutiérrez
