Pingus 1998 is a distinguished red wine from Dominio de Pingus in Ribera del Duero, Spain, the creation of Danish winemaker Peter Sisseck. This vintage, produced from 100% Tinto Fino, benefits from old bush vines that yield low quantities and concentrate flavours. The 1998 year experienced favourable weather, leading to ripe grapes. Sisseck`s approach, prior to his later biodynamic practices, included minimal intervention and open-top fermentation. The wine is noted for its opaque colour and complex aromas of dark fruits, oak and earthy nuances. It presents a full-bodied palate marked by structured tannins and notable ageing potential.

Saturated ruby-red. Highly nuanced nose of black- and redcurrant, raspberry, Cuban tobacco, minerals, brown spices and currant leaf. Large-scaled but sharply delineated, though less sweet and a bit heavier than the '99. Shows the intriguing Provençal herb component that I've found in just about every vintage of Pingus. Finishes very long, with firm acids and tannins. With 48 hours in the recorked bottle, this showed exotic spices and white pepper, and a Burgundian finesse. Perhaps not quite as thick as I thought a year ago; or perhaps it is simply overwhelmed today by the '99. Stephen Tanzer1st September 2000

Deep crimson with less defined fading at the rim. Smudgy, briary, autumnal bouquet. Much more developed than the 1996. Bitter chocolate and lots of acidity. Tannins less in evidence than on the 1996. More in common with the 1995. Relatively gentle. (JR)
