The Pierre Péters Cuvée Spéciale Les Chétillons 2005 is a single-vineyard, vintage blanc de blancs Champagne produced from Grand Cru Chardonnay from the heart of the Côte des Blancs. This prestigious cuvée is sourced from old vines in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, and the 2005 vintage yielded rich, broad Chardonnay, which Péters handled with purity, ageing the wine extensively sur lattes with a brut dosage. The palate is defined by deep concentration, offering notes of citrus peel, ginger and marzipan, all underpinned by a powerful backbone of chalky minerality and a long, seamless finish. Available here in magnum.
92 Vinous
(50% Pinot Noir and 50% Chardonnay; 8 g/l dosage): Light yellow-gold. Intensely perfumed bouquet of honeysuckle, yellow apple, pear and quinine, plus a smoky mineral overtone. Spicy orchard and citrus fruit flavors are complemented by deeper notes of sweet butter and brioche and gain power with air. Impressively focused Champagne, with nervy mineral cut and lingering spiciness on the finish. This bottling, which is aged on its lees for seven years before disgorgement, is made exclusively for importer Kermit Lynch. Josh Raynolds1st December 2014

Peters` 2005 Brut Blanc de Blancs Cuvee Speciale Les Chetillons - based on parcels of old selection massale vines in a single lieu-dit - reflects a vintage that, as he puts it, "was on the limit of burnt (brulee) fruit." The nose here strikingly suggests sauteed mushrooms on toast, along with hints of citrus oils, Latakia tobacco, smoky black tea, and the salinity that happily, mouthwateringly infiltrates the palate. Nutty piquancy adds to the savor of a sustained and intriguingly fungal, smoky and toasty finish. I would be inclined to enjoy this over the coming year or two. It should reveal fascinating potential at table. - David Schildknecht

A Highly Respected Grower
Rodolphe Péters, head of Champagne Pierre Péters, is a fascinating and highly regarded grower who has around seventeen hectares of vineyards in Champagne, mostly in the Grand Crus of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Rodolphe makes bold, expressive wines that utilise a full malolactic, high temperature fermentation to balance the clean, zippy acidity naturally found in the Champagne grapes he farms.
Rodolphe's vintage bottlings now have a cult status among Champagne lovers while his non-vintage 'Cuvée de Réserve' and 'Extra Brut' are as accessible as they are delicious, made with around 30% reserve wines from a decades old solera system.
