The Pierre Ferrand Ancestrale is a pure Grande Champagne cognac. At about 70 years old, it is an impeccable ‘Ancestrale’ blend and part of a collection of cognacs that are some of the oldest in the house’s cellar. On the nose, notes of leather, tobacco and walnut come to mind. The palate suggests toasted almonds with hints of violet and vanilla, finishing on a spiced note.

Vinous
This is one of the first really old Cognacs I fell in love with, more than a decade ago, and I revisited it with trepidation. A blend of 50- to 70-year-old Grand Champagne, deep copper in color. The nose is complex, beautiful and mysterious, offering clove, dates, exotic wood, incense and pipe smoke. On the palate, it feels dark and luxurious—fig, leather, licorice, soy sauce, antique varnish, cedar — and at midpalate it all melds into a profound rancio finish that lingers for what seems like hours. This is a Cognac I would use to convert a committed bourbon drinker. The price keeps creeping up, but I’m happy to see my old pal Ancestrale still delivers. (40% abv)Jason Wilson1st September 2019
