A château renowned for its elegance and precision, Pichon Lalande has long been a defining name in Pauillac, crafting wines that balance power with finesse. The 2012 vintage, shaped by a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend, opens with an inviting nose of blackcurrant, violets, and graphite, accented by cedar, cigar box, and a touch of dark chocolate. The palate is silky yet structured, with finely grained tannins supporting a core of ripe cassis, plum, and subtle spice, leading to a long, poised finish. A wine of graceful intensity, already showing remarkable harmony but with the depth to evolve beautifully in the coming years.

The 2012 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is medium to deep garnet colored. It bursts with flamboyant scents of creme de cassis, blackberry pie, and redcurrant preserves, plus suggestions of lilacs, bay leaves, and tree bark. The medium-bodied palate is taut and muscular, with firm, chewy tannins and a savory finish.Lisa Perrotti-Brown16th February 2023

The 2012 Pichon-Lalande has a rather musky bouquet at first, juniper and mint infusing the black fruit, not quite translating the essence of Pauillac as well as others, though still attractive. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fleshy and silky smooth. There is a veneer of high quality oak here, quite plush on the finish yet at the same time, nicely controlled. Good potential, though I would like to see improvement aromatically. Tasted twice at Bordeaux Index's Ten Year-On tasting and blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting. Tasted blind. Good energy and lift. Racy and polished. Lift and tea leaves. Slightly jagged tannins. But very long and energetic. (JR)

A Benchmark Pauillac

Also known by the full name of Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, the estate is celebrated for its Grand Vin, a Pauillac Second Growth which is a wonderfully vibrant red with well-structured, characterful tannins. Seen as one of the benchmark producers from Pauillac and well-known for wines that offer beautifully ripe fruit, sumptuous texture and deep savoury complexity.

With currently 74 hectares of vineyards in production, 50% is used to produce the first wine, whilst the remaining 50% - from younger vines- goes into producing the estate's second wine, Pichon Comtesse Réserve (known as Réserve de la Comtesse prior to 2017). Key varieties are the classic red Bordeaux grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
