Château Pichon-Longueville Baron 2006 is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon and 37% Merlot, showcasing the estate`s distinctive terroir. Following its purchase by the Roederer Group, the 2006 vintage reflects a meticulous selection process, with only 41% of the harvest deemed worthy of the grand vin. The wine presents deep ruby hues and a complex bouquet featuring blackcurrants, graphite and hints of tobacco. The palate offers structured tannins and a full-bodied profile, leading to an extended finish.

One of the most pleasant and unexpected surprises in this tasting, the 2006 Pichon Lalande is gorgeous, which is something I can’t say about too many wines in a vintage marked by climatic ups and downs and irregular ripening. Dark, powerful and intense, the 2006 possesses exceptional balance. A host of black cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and menthol flesh out in this decidedly somber, virile Pichon Lalande. In a vintage in which so many wines are so rustic, the 2006 Pichon Lalande is all class. This sleeper Pichon Lalande will drink well for at least the next two decades, perhaps longer. Velvety tannins, lovely depth of flavours and blackberry fruit, bracken, brambled hedgerows, a ton of cassis puree and juice. Enjoyable, still young, love the cedar oak notes that are unveiled as it opens, along with the warm turmeric spice. Still so much tannic frame holding everything in place, this is starting to open but with plenty of life ahead. These was a big wine En Primeur and is still big shouldered. 3.65ph. Tasted at the property, the 2006 Château Pichon-Lalande has a voluminous bouquet with outgoing blackberry, cassis and violets scents, a touch of boysenberry jam tucked just underneath, although it does not quite have the delineation of the Lynch Bages. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. This feels very composed in the mouth, quite fresh with well-judged acidity, harmonious and tensile on the finish. This deserves a higher score than I awarded out of barrel and it continues to improve year by year. Tasted April 2016. - Neal Martin

A Benchmark Pauillac

Also known by the full name of Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, the estate is celebrated for its Grand Vin, a Pauillac Second Growth which is a wonderfully vibrant red with well-structured, characterful tannins. Seen as one of the benchmark producers from Pauillac and well-known for wines that offer beautifully ripe fruit, sumptuous texture and deep savoury complexity.

With currently 74 hectares of vineyards in production, 50% is used to produce the first wine, whilst the remaining 50% - from younger vines- goes into producing the estate's second wine, Pichon Comtesse Réserve (known as Réserve de la Comtesse prior to 2017). Key varieties are the classic red Bordeaux grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
