For many lovers of Bordeaux, Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is often seen as one of the benchmark producers from Pauillac and is well-known for wines that offer wonderfully ripe fruit, sumptuous texture and deep savoury complexity. Here is the `81 vintage. expect an elegant mature Bordeaux profile with cigar box and cedar notes.
90 Vinous
The 1981 Pichon-Lalande was served with the 1982 and 1983 by estate director Nicolas Glumineau. I must confess that I was shocked how well it showed, far surpassing the example shown at a vertical a few months earlier. This has a lovely bouquet of black fruit, autumn leaves, cedar and bay leaf, clearly bestowed with more vigor than previous bottles. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, leather and sage-infused fruit, like before. A melted finish indicates that this '81 will never get better. But it is delicious and in no way embarrassed by the 1982. Tasted at the château. Neal Martin1st December 2019

A Benchmark Pauillac

Also known by the full name of Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, the estate is celebrated for its Grand Vin, a Pauillac Second Growth which is a wonderfully vibrant red with well-structured, characterful tannins. Seen as one of the benchmark producers from Pauillac and well-known for wines that offer beautifully ripe fruit, sumptuous texture and deep savoury complexity.

With currently 74 hectares of vineyards in production, 50% is used to produce the first wine, whilst the remaining 50% - from younger vines- goes into producing the estate's second wine, Pichon Comtesse Réserve (known as Réserve de la Comtesse prior to 2017). Key varieties are the classic red Bordeaux grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
