Pichon Comtesse Réserve, the highly sought-after second wine of Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, has garnered exceptional popularity. The 2021 vintage of this remarkable wine is crafted from a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and the remaining Petit Verdot. Aged for 12 months in 40% new French oak, it unfolds with a captivating array of dark fruits, including currants and black cherries, complemented by nuances of ripe tobacco and cedar. Displaying a medium body, the wine offers a harmonious and elegant mouthfeel that exemplifies balance and finesse.

The 2021 Réserve de la Comtesse has developed into an elegant, polished Pauillac. Silky, aromatic and racy, the 2021 is seriously impressive. Graphite, lavender, spice, menthol and licorice meld into a core of dark blue/purplish fruit. In some recent years, the Réserve has been a big wine, maybe too big. In 2021, it’s a wine of unbelievable elegance. The winemaking team gave this a bit more new oak (70%) at the beginning of élevage—an unusual choice—then dialed it back to 60% for 12 months.Antonio Galloni27th February 2024

A Benchmark Pauillac

Also known by the full name of Château Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, the estate is celebrated for its Grand Vin, a Pauillac Second Growth which is a wonderfully vibrant red with well-structured, characterful tannins. Seen as one of the benchmark producers from Pauillac and well-known for wines that offer beautifully ripe fruit, sumptuous texture and deep savoury complexity.

With currently 74 hectares of vineyards in production, 50% is used to produce the first wine, whilst the remaining 50% - from younger vines- goes into producing the estate's second wine, Pichon Comtesse Réserve (known as Réserve de la Comtesse prior to 2017). Key varieties are the classic red Bordeaux grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
