Château Pichon Baron`s Grand Vin is a 2nd Cru Classé and comes from the oldest vines grown on the historic plots of the estate. A beautiful Pauillac offering an amazing sensory experience with its black fruit flavours and spicy hints. Château Pichon Baron shows great elegance, intensity and exceptional length on the palate and is an elegant blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Here is a special find from the `61 vintage.
90 Vinous
The 1961 Pichon Baron, a wine that I have drunk three times before, finally produces a bottle that fits the billing. The bouquet is wonderful with vibrant, concentrated black fruit laced with cedar and mint, aromatics with a spring in its step. That telltale briny note emerges with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, quite structured and concentrated, not as complex as its peers but there is good grip and spiciness on the finish. This has the substance to last, though it will not meliorate after six decades. Tasted at the Pichon Baron Ancienne Millésime tasting. - Neil Martin - The 1961 Pichon-Baron presents a rather rustic but attractive bouquet - so long as you have a penchant for old-fashioned claret. It’s a bit dusty and muffled now, but still shows good presence (it must have had ample fruit concentration in its youth) and touches of sea spray and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin. This is a foursquare 1961, missing the elegance and complexity of the finest wines of that vintage, yet balanced and classic, with smoke and tobacco on the finish. Tasted at the Pichon-Baron vertical at the château.
