Vinous
The 1982 Pichon-Baron was tasted from two bottles since the first felt a little cooked. The musty, earthy, mushroom-scented bouquet lacks the complexity and vivacity of its peers, not least the 1982 Pichon-Lalande. The palate is medium-bodied with dry tannin. This now feels a little mealy in the mouth, with some dryness toward the final third that does not entice you back for another sip. Despite laudatory comments elsewhere, having tasting this several times, I find the 1982 Pichon Baron to be very ordinary. Tasted at the Pichon-Baron vertical at the château. Chateau Pichon Baron
A Super Second Classed Growth
Château Pichon Baron is celebrated for its Grand Vin, a Pauillac Second Growth which comes from the oldest vines grown on the historic plots of the estate. A beautiful red, displaying a superb black fruit profile with spicy hints. Château Pichon Baron shows great elegance, intensity and exceptional length on the palate. A well-balanced blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
The Château also produces two second wines, the Cabernet-focused Les Griffons de Pichon Longueville and the Merlot-dominant Les Tourelles de Pichon Longueville. The 73 hectare estate is planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.
