The 2006 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron is a blend composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, aged 20 months in oak barrels [80% new]. On the nose, aromas of blackcurrant, dried red fruits, cedar, tobacco, dried herbs, tea leaves, truffles, leather and crushed rocks. Good grip and finesse on the palate.

One of the rare estates where the 2006 is a step above the 2005 - one of those wines that makes doing a vertical so rewarding, as you discover the hidden successes, and this is one I highly recommend. Waves of sweet blackberry and juicy raspberry fruits, toned and muscular tannins, sinewy with bounce, extremely inviting overall. Tobacco leaf and slate, signature Pauillac pencil lead and grilled cedar all combine to give a drawn out finish. The underground cellar opened in this year, so they were able to extend the length of ageing because had more space for the barrels, and it has paid off. 80% new oak. Closed but promising, this is a tannic, masculine style of wine in 2006, with an inky bluish/purple color as well as aromas of incense, charcoal, smoked meats, and the classic creme de cassis that one finds in the top Pauillacs. The aromatics are still retrained, but the wine is full-bodied in the mouth, tannic, backward, and set for a relatively long life. This is not one of the profound wines from Pichon Longueville Baron, but it is certainly a top-flight success for the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2028.Robert Parker25th February 2009

Tasted at Bordeaux Index`s annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Pichon Baron has more red than black fruit on the nose, quite showy with hints of crème de cassis and then later it calms down to reveal classic pencil lead aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth. This is quite assertive and grippy, although later vintages have evinced more precision and mineralité on the finish. Still, this is a fine if rather burly Pichon Baron. Tasted January 2016. - Neal Martin

The 2006 Pichon-Baron has the same showy crème de cassis–tinged bouquet that I have remarked upon in previous bottles, pure but missing the complexity of the 2004 and 2005. The medium-bodied palate is bold and assertive, with thick, chewy tannin, but the class and sophistication are not at the level I would expect. It offers volume and matière but not panache. I am intrigued to see how it will age. Tasted at the Pichon-Baron vertical at the château. Neal Martin1st January 2019

A Super Second Classed Growth
Château Pichon Baron is celebrated for its Grand Vin, a Pauillac Second Growth which comes from the oldest vines grown on the historic plots of the estate. A beautiful red, displaying a superb black fruit profile with spicy hints. Château Pichon Baron shows great elegance, intensity and exceptional length on the palate. The Château also produces two second wines, the Cabernet-focused Les Griffons de Pichon Longueville and the Merlot-dominant Les Tourelles de Pichon Longueville. The 73 hectare estate is planted to 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.
