Pibran 2006 is a red wine from the Pauillac appellation, crafted under the guidance of the AXA Millésimes team, known for their management of Château Pichon Baron. This vintage features a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, delivered at 13% alcohol. The vineyard, situated on the Pibran plateau, benefits from clay-limestone soils, which contribute to the wine’s rounded mouthfeel. Aged for 12 months in 50% new French oak, it frames the dark fruit and savoury nuances with subtlety. The wine displays characteristics such as blackberries, graphite, and espresso, alongside a firm tannic structure that demands patience for full development.

The 2006 Pibran has a surprisingly sumptuous bouquet of raspberry coulis and blackberry scents mixed with vanilla. It is much more precocious than anticipated. The palate has a smooth texture and a touch of dark chocolate infusing the black fruit, and there is a discreet lactic element on the finish. This is a very good wine for a 2006, although the oak feels a little prominent after so much time in bottle. Tasted at the Pibran vertical at Château Pichon-Baron. Neal Martin1st January 2019
