The Philipponnat Cuvée 1522 2018 is a vintage Champagne that honours the year the Philipponnat family established itself in Ay. This special edition bottling blends Pinot Noir from Aÿ and Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs. The 2018 vintage was generous and warm, yet careful selection ensured a wine of aromatic complexity and freshness, aged for six years sur lattes and finished with a low dosage. This expression displays a concentrated profile of toasted brioche, lemon zest and crushed chalk, underpinned by a creamy texture and a long, tense, mineral-laced finish.

Philipponnat’s 2018 Extra-Brut 1522 Grand Cru is a great success—not just in the context of the vintage. Comprising 72% Pinot Noir from the Le Léon vineyard in Aÿ and 28% Chardonnay from Oger, it wafts from the glass with a deep bouquet of orange peel, crisp apple, peach and gooseberry mingling with bread. On the palate, it is full-bodied, elegantly muscular and impeccably balanced, with a deep core of crisp fruit, tangy acidity and a long, sapid finish. Disgorged in October 2023 with a dosage of 4.5 grams per liter, this is a wine of real character. - Kristaps Karklins

The 2018 Extra Brut 1522 is a blend of 72% Pinot Noir from Aÿ and 28% from Oger. Ample and resonant in the glass, the 2018 is a wine of notable stature. Pinot is very much front and center in both the wine's flavor profile and structural feel. Red plum, kirsch, spice, chamomile, leather and dried flowers build into the huge, palate-staining finish. Dosage is 4.5 grams per liter. Disgorged: October 2023. Antonio Galloni8th April 2025

Champagne tradition with a modern twist

Based in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Philipponnat is a historic Champagne house that has been owned by the Lanson-BCC group since 1997. It was the first Champagne producer to clearly label its bottles with the main year used in a blend, along with the dosage and date of disgorgement. Among the Philipponnat range, the house's Royal Réserve Brut is a classic blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, with up to one-third of the blend coming from two ‘perpetual reserves’. This cuvée offers the perfect introduction to the house style. Royal Réserve Non Dosé and Rosé expressions are also made.

Cuvée 1522 commemorates the year when the Philipponnat family first began cultivating vineyards in the village of Aÿ. The blend typically consists of approximately 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay, with the majority of the grapes sourced from Premier and Grand Cru vineyards. The most powerful Champagne in the house's portfolio is Clos de Goisses, a prestige cuvée produced using grapes grown in a single walled vineyard on a pure chalk, south-facing hillside in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ.
