Owned by Belgian businessman Philippe Van de Vyvere since 2017, Château Phélan-Ségur is a picturesque estate situated in the Saint Estephe appellation. The 2014 vintage is a classic Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant expression, presented here in half bottle. Beautifully perfumed, the wine offers notes of walnuts, wet pebbles, violets and cassis. Drinking well now.

The 2014 Phelan-Segur has quite a punchy nose with blackberry, iris and iodine scents that shoot from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a pleasant chewiness on the entry. This segues into a well balanced middle with well-judged acidity, crisp black fruit infused with graphite and a touch of sea salt towards the finish. It might not quite have the finesse of the top Saint Estèphe`s, but there is clearly decent length and energy here. Tasted twice with consistent notes. - Neal Martin

The 2014 Phélan-Ségur has a floral, almost Margaux-like nose. Crushed violet infuses the black fruit, while cedar and brown spices come through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with angular tannins, fresh and slightly compact with a linear finish. I wonder if this is in a closed phase, as previous bottles have shown better? This is one that I will seek to retaste. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting. Neal Martin19th March 2024
