Founded in the early 19th century by Bernard Phélan, Château Phélan Ségur has long been a benchmark for Saint-Estèphe’s structured and age-worthy wines. The 1995 vintage reflects the estate’s classic style, delivering a wine of depth and poise. A blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it opens with aromas of blackcurrant, cedar, and graphite, intertwined with hints of tobacco and dried herbs. The palate is firm and concentrated, its grippy tannins and fresh acidity supporting a core of dark fruit, spice, and earthy minerality. Now showing fine tertiary development, this vintage continues to evolve, highlighting Phélan Ségur’s ability to balance power with refinement.

Managing Director Véronique Dausse opened a 1995 Phélan Ségur on the first day of my visit during en primeur, and it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise since this is not regarded as a particularly auspicious decade for the estate. Showing modest bricking on the rim, the bouquet has a little more pep than I would have predicted given that it is now 30 years old, with lovely brambly redcurrant and raspberry fruit laced with pencil shavings and sous-bois plus a hint of lavender in the background. The palate is fully mature and very well balanced, not powerful or deep yet fresh with a pretty, Saint-Julien-inspired finish that lingers. This is well worth seeking out. Tasted at the château. 84 Robert Parker
Consistently open-knit, soft, and pleasant, but essentially one-dimensional and monochromatic, the 1995 Phelan-Segur offers enjoyable fruit in the nose, but it lacks the depth and richness of other top vintages of this well-placed St.-Estephe cru bourgeois. Anticipated maturity. Now-2005. - Robert M. Parker, Jr.

A bit pale and dull. Straightforward, linear fruit. Well balanced if not the most vital or punchy. Good manners but quite forward. (JR)
