Pétrus 1988 is a red wine from the Pomerol appellation in Bordeaux, crafted exclusively from Merlot grapes grown on the Pétrus estate`s clay-dominant plateau. The 1988 vintage experienced a warm growing season, resulting in ripe fruit character and notable structure. Aged in French oak, it presents a complex aroma profile of blackcurrant, cocoa, earthy undertones and hints of cedar. On the palate, the wine is defined by plush tannins, a mineral backbone and a lengthy finish. Pétrus is renowned for its meticulous vineyard practices and has a history of producing some of Bordeaux`s most sought-after wines. Available in magnum format.

The 1988 Petrus fooled me when served blind. Its opulence tricked me into thinking it was the Le Pin tasted alongside. This might be partly because this came from magnum. It has a gorgeous nose, more expressive than the bottle at the Petrus vertical, with veins of blue fruit and iodine, thyme and sous-bois. Quite bold. The palate is medium-bodied and much less austere than its bottled counterpart, with impressive density, though without that peacock's tail that the next two vintages boast. Yet a very "useful" Petrus that will give another couple of decades of drinking pleasure. Tasted at the 1988 Bordeaux dinner at Noble Rot Mayfair. Neal Martin2nd July 2024

The Perfect Pomerol?

Producing one of the most revered red wines in the world, Petrus was the first Pomerol estate to win a gold medal in the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878. Indeed, Petrus' world class reputation speaks for itself and it is often considered the pinnacle of Bordeaux' s Right Bank Pomerol appellation.

Spanning 11.7ha, the Petrus vineyards are characterised by their distinctive sticky blue clay soils, producing wonderfully powerful, complex wines with glorious aromatics and texture and an extraordinary capacity for aging. Almost always made from 100% Merlot, the style of Petrus is unique and in the best vintages often achieves levels of aromatic complexity, richness and silky texture that others simply cannot. Despite wonderfully warming levels of alcohol, this is a wine that is balanced by beautiful freshness.
