Pétrus 2022 is a distinguished Pomerol wine crafted primarily from Merlot. This vintage marks a significant moment for the estate, as the challenge of a historic heatwave was met with the unique character of the vineyard`s clay soils, which retain moisture effectively. Under the guidance of winemaker Olivier Berrouet, the resulting wine possesses a concentrated structure with a fine tannic quality. Pétrus has a long-standing reputation for quality, with roots tracing back to the 18th century, making it a historical reference point in the world of fine wine.

The 2022 Petrus was bottled in June 2024. Olivier Berrouet thought the weather conditions could have compromised the wine during the growing season. "You had to be careful to stop the aging process sooner in order to preserve the freshness," he tells me. The 2022 was aged in 50% new oak as is customary, a mixture of six cooperages. This is a Petrus that looked around at the competition and decided to remind everyone why it is so revered. It is taken to an ethereal level by Berrouet's decision just to ease off the accelerator and not push the wine. As I found from barrel, the aromatics take time to unfurl, offering gorgeous black plum, black truffle and subtle oyster shell scents. Over 20 minutes, it achieves unmatched complexity and delineation that will compare with the best vintages in recent years. The palate is medium-bodied with magical balance and poise. Compared to its showing in barrel, there is more sapidity, an ethereal sense of harmony and a pixelated finish. Sure, it is going to cost an arm and a leg, but there is no doubting that this is a sensational Petrus.Neal Martin12th February 2025

The 2022 Pétrus has turned out even better than I anticipated en primeur, displaying breathtaking purity and integration. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of mulberries, minty cherries, rose petals and violets, it`s full-bodied, dense and layered, with huge depth at the core, sweet, powdery tannins and a long, resonant finish. This is a profound Pétrus in the making that exemplifies controlled power. Olivier Berrouet opted to shorten the time in barrel by a couple of months to preserve vibrancy. - William Kelley

This is 100% Merlot as it has been for many years now, and it started life with a short 17-day cuvaison, and gentle remontage and no pigeage, to control the extraction. The élevage was in 50% new oak, the remaining 50% second-fill barrels first used in 2020, with 16 months in barrel in total. A remarkable colour in the glass, dark mulberry, concentrated yet not opaque. Smoky berry fruits follow on the nose, with dark chocolate and bramble, liquorice with a touch of sage and fragrant iris root complexity. There is a little caramelised oak as well, but this will fade. Coming back to it more smoky complexities emerge, with notes of raspberry, violet and a touch of toasted coffee bean. This all precedes a palate with a generous texture, velvety although not dense or overly extracted, merely polished, finessed, complete, confident, with a beautifully integrated backbone of tannins, barely noticeable at first, and then apparent at the finish, wrapped around black fruit skins and oak. A great vintage for Petrus, with nicely balanced acidity adding freshness, and I can see this evolving over many decades. This is one feather all Petrus-lovers will want to have in their cap. The alcohol is declared to be 14.5%.Chris Kissack5th June 2025

The Perfect Pomerol?

Producing one of the most revered red wines in the world, Petrus was the first Pomerol estate to win a gold medal in the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878. Indeed, Petrus' world class reputation speaks for itself and it is often considered the pinnacle of Bordeaux' s Right Bank Pomerol appellation.

Spanning 11.7ha, the Petrus vineyards are characterised by their distinctive sticky blue clay soils, producing wonderfully powerful, complex wines with glorious aromatics and texture and an extraordinary capacity for aging. Almost always made from 100% Merlot, the style of Petrus is unique and in the best vintages often achieves levels of aromatic complexity, richness and silky texture that others simply cannot. Despite wonderfully warming levels of alcohol, this is a wine that is balanced by beautiful freshness.
