Pétrus 2011 presents a complex character emblematic of its challenging vintage. Olivier Berrouet noted the necessity for cautious extraction, as tannins were notably elevated – around 10-15% more than the preceding year. The weather featured 120 fewer hours of sunlight, yet sorting was minimal, reflecting the vineyard`s adept management. The nose hints at minerality intertwined with the purity of Merlot fruit. The palate reveals ripe plum and cherry liqueur nuances, accentuated by a fine texture.

- The 2011 Petrus has plenty of fruit on the nose, elegant and floral, redcurrant and raspberry fruit, a touch of crushed stone and pressed rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with a rich and quite extravagant style of the finish, lightly spiced with a rounded, velvety-smooth and quite dense finish. Maybe it just conveys a little more winemaking that the terroir at the moment? Tasted blind at the annual 10-Year-On tasting.

The Perfect Pomerol?

Producing one of the most revered red wines in the world, Petrus was the first Pomerol estate to win a gold medal in the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878. Indeed, Petrus' world class reputation speaks for itself and it is often considered the pinnacle of Bordeaux' s Right Bank Pomerol appellation.

Spanning 11.7ha, the Petrus vineyards are characterised by their distinctive sticky blue clay soils, producing wonderfully powerful, complex wines with glorious aromatics and texture and an extraordinary capacity for aging. Almost always made from 100% Merlot, the style of Petrus is unique and in the best vintages often achieves levels of aromatic complexity, richness and silky texture that others simply cannot. Despite wonderfully warming levels of alcohol, this is a wine that is balanced by beautiful freshness.
